Introduction of NREGA

Text Box: The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (No. 42 of 2005) having received the assent of the President on 5th September 2005 was Published in the Gazette of India on 7th September 2005. The Act guarantees 100 days of employment in a financial year to any rural household whose adult members are willing to do unskilled manual work. The basic objective of the Act is to enhance livelihood security in rural areas along with other objectives like generating productive assets, protection of environment, empowering rural women, reducing rural-urban migration and fostering social equity among others. The Act is an important step towards the realization of the right to work. NREGA is said to be an enactment of the people, by the people and for the people.

	In terms of Section 4 of the Act  State Government in the Department of Panchayats & RD formulated and published West Bengal Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, 2006 on 17th January,2006 with a view to facilitate design and implementation of Rural Employment Guarantee Schemes taking into account West Bengal's economic, social and institutional context. 

	Paschim Medinipur is one of the 200 districts in the country where the Act came into force initially. NREGA/WBREGS was introduced in our district on 2nd February, 2006.
